In the wake of the devastating attack on Artsakh by Azerbaijani forces on September 19th, hundreds of thousands of Armenians were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind not only their possessions but also their homeland.

The Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) has been at the forefront of the relief efforts, providing critical assistance to those in need since day one.

Emergency Shelter and Comfort: 600 Find Temporary Shelters

The humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict compelled AMAA to act swiftly. The organization initially focused on providing shelters, ensuring that those forcibly displaced from Artsakh had safe and comfortable places to stay. AMAA set up shelters in various locations, including Goris, Sisian, Hankavan, and Vanadzor. In total, approximately 600 individuals found refuge in AMAA facilities, including the “Shoghik” Camp in Hankavan, which became a sanctuary for those in need.

Nourishment and Necessities: Food Parcels, Hygiene Packs, Hot Meals and More to 5,000 People

AMAA’s commitment to supporting the forcibly displaced population was further demonstrated through the provision of hot meals three times a day and essential necessities.Recognizing the urgency of the situation, AMAA also procured approximately 537 bedding mattresses and provided financial assistance for rent assurance.

With the assistance of dedicated partners, AMAA distributed 526 food parcels, 319 hygiene packs, around 10 medical packs with first aid supplies, approximately 1,000 items of clothing, and distributed around 360 units of milk powder for babies from Artsakh.

At AMAA’s “Shoghik” Camp in Hankavan, a special fun day was organized for the temporary resident children, providing them with moments of joy and relief. In Vayk and Goris, AMAA volunteers distributed hot soups, drinks, and sweets to approximately 5,000 people, offering not only sustenance but also a sense of community and support.

Securing Their Future: Employment Support, Education and Healthcare

60 AMAA employees from the Artsakh office remain employed, a testament to AMAA’s commitment to its extended family. AMAA’s social workers were instrumental in placing 68 children forcibly displaced from Artsakh back in schools and kindergartens, including 40 children who were admitted to AMAA’s Avedisian School in Yerevan.

Furthermore, a team of doctors from AMAA provided vital medical assistance, medication, and counseling to those experiencing various health issues.

A Journey of Hope and Rebuilding

However, AMAAs commitment to helping those forcibly displaced from Artsakh does not end here. The organization is actively working on a long-term plan to secure permanent homes and employment opportunities for these families.
